Goose Nest Relocation

We have a permit from the DNR/USDA for Goose Nest Relocation.

If you have a goose nest on your property and would like to have it removed, please email me this week.  Timing is important to ensure the geese do not lay more eggs or come back next year.  About 1,000 nests have been permanently removed so far.

CIHA MEETING NOTES

March 27, 2012 @ 7:00pm @ Maureen’s house

Members present: Maureen Thomas, Craig Leonard, Denise Adams, Renee Brodie, Barb Marowski, Sherry Woodbeck, Judy Paulson, and Sue Tonkovich

BOARD ACTIONS

Linda Tolman hired again to do landscaping.  Lawn Stars (Dan LaFontaine) hired again to do lawn and mulch.  No other bids received. Tru Green bought Masters Green. Hired again to do two weed and feeds. We did not bid that out this year.

PARK CLEAN-UP

Scheduled for April 28th. If you’d like to help with the clean-up, contact Craig Leonard or email us.

BOAT LAUNCH

We are trying to establish a special assessment district for our lake to pay for the DNR to have summer rangers stationed at the public access on weekends and holidays between Memorial Day and Labor Day beginning in 2013.  An email survey will be sent out soon with more details. We estimate the cost to be approximately $25 in the first year and $13 per year after that (this is per home on the lake) which would be collected by the Township in your tax bill.

TREASURER’S REPORT

2012 Budget approved as presented. Only 62 homes have paid dues as of the end of March. Please mail your dues and fireworks contribution (payable to “CIHA”) to Dave Weber @ 10033 Cedar Shores.

GOOSE NEST RELOCATION

We have a permit for Goose Nest Removal.  If you see any nests, please send an e-mail.

FUTURE BOARD MEETINGS

Board meetings are open to the entire association and are held quarterly.  Dates will be published in the newsletter and/or reminders posted on the park sign.  We welcome your attendance and are interested in your opinions.  If you have an item to add to the agenda, please contact a board member a few days prior to the meeting.

UPCOMING EVENTS

****GARAGE SALE****
MAY 17,18 AND 19 2012

If you plan to participate please send us an email so we can add your address to the map.  If you have any special or unique items to sell, let us know so we can list them in our ads.  Denise Adams will be organizing this event.

ADDITIONAL CONCERNS

DOG OWNERS: PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE OF YOUR NEIGHBORS

Keep your dog on a leash when outdoors. It's the law in Michigan. When you look at your dog you see the beloved family pet that would never hurt anyone. But kids walking to the bus stop or a friend's house and folks walking or jogging through the subdivision for exercise see an unleashed, barking animal racing at them ready to attack.  And don't forget to take the pooper scooper when you walk your dogs or take them to the park.

NO SOLICITATION

White Lake Township is working on a NO SOLICITION ORDINANCE.  We have advised the Township Supervisor and Township Lawyer that we believe the ordinance should state where an Association has posted a “No Solicitation” sign that no solicitation is permitted in that subdivision.  We will follow up on this and report back when we know more.

HEDGE BLOCKING VIEW AT ENTRANCE

We continue to receive complaints that the folks cannot see when turning left out of the subdivision due to the hedge at Cliff and Janice Carne’s home at 245 Oxbow Rd.  We have spoken with the Carnes and written them letters asking them to trim the hedge lower.  We have complained to the Oakland County Road Commission (the hedge is within the right of way so they can remove or trim it) but they have done nothing. We have complained to the Township and they indicate it is a road commission issue.  The Police Chief came out here last November and said he did not think the hedge was too tall.  We marked the height of the hedge on the utility pole so that when it grows taller this spring we can ask the Police Chief to come back out and take a second look.

To complain, please contact the OCRC at: dcsmail@rcoc.org or 877-858-4804.

FUTURE TREE PLANTING

We obtained an application for the DTE/DNR tree planting grant program.  The application will take some time and effort to complete and we will need to obtain approval from Oakland County to plant trees in the cul de sac islands.  We plan to apply in December and hope to be awarded a matching grant of up to $3000.00 for tree planting in 2013.

ENTRANCE SIGN

We are investigating whether we can run an electric line at the entrance to light up the sign at night.

ANNUAL MEETING NOTES

10-13-11 @ TOWNSHIP BOARD ROOM

Members present: Maureen Thomas, Dave Weber, Larry & Denise Adams, Craig Leonard, Cheri Schell, Kelly House, Rowena Elick, Richard Brooks, Steven Cooper and Lee Jaffke.

BOARD ACTIONS
We renewed our insurance for the park. The premium has increased $17. Our carrier, Auto Owners is a Michigan company and has a good reputation for handling claims. We have re-bid in past years and have not found a better value.

Members present agreed that there was no need to seek bids for snow removal since our current contractor agreed not to increase his prices. The contractor will place stakes in various areas in the subdivision to guide his crews during deep snowfalls. Please do not remove the stakes.

A third letter has been sent to Janice & Cliff Carne who live on the corner of Oxbow and Burgess (right side as you exit) asking them to please trim their bushes back. No response has been received. Matt Slicker agreed to follow up with the Road Commission and Maureen will discuss this with the Township again.

The park is now closed from dusk – dawn (except for the Halloween and Christmas Bonfires). A sign has been posted in the park on the baseball backstop and the Township Police have been notified. Person in the park between dusk and dawn are subject to search and will be ticketed for trespass. Parents please alert your teens.

A no solicitation sign has been purchased for the entrance in response to complaints from Members about door to door solicitations.

Trees in the park and on the Burgess cul de sac island were trimmed this summer. Mulch rings were placed around the trees on the Ranveen cul de sac to prevent damage from the line trimmer. We plan to work with the Township to apply for a DTE/DNR matching tree grant next month so we can plant additional trees next year.

TREASURER’S REPORT
We have received dues from 114 out of 145 members. See attached Financial Report. A discussion was held about printing the names of Members who have not paid their dues. Instead, we voted to thank those who have paid by publishing their names in the next Newsletter.

DOG OWNERS “IN THE DOG HOUSE”
We constantly hear complaints about dogs running loose in the subdivision and the park and dog owners not cleaning up after their pets. We are considering banning dogs from the park and all common areas if dog owners do not step up to their responsibilities. Roaming cats are a problem as well.

Unless you have an invisible fence around your entire property (that actually works) and your dog stays within that fence 100% of the time, YOU MUST leash your dog when it is outside. THIS IS STATE LAW. Members who have an invisible fence, please notify us so that we can put a list in the Directory.

Dog Owners, please pick up after your dog when you walk it in the subdivision or the park. We have a trash can in the park and will tie a few plastic grocery bags to it as a backup.

VERY IMPORTANT: If you encounter an aggressive dog in the sub PLEASE report it to ANIMAL CONTROL (248) 391-4102. Multiple reports are required before Animal Control can remove the dog.

If you know a Member who does not leash or pick up after their pets, please place a copy of this Newsletter in their mailbox highlighting the article above. Sometimes peer pressure can have a positive impact!

HALLOWEEN BONFIRE
The Bonfire will be Halloween night after the trick or treaters are finished - about 8:00 p.m. Jeremy Macbeth has volunteered to get the pallets, Craig Leonard will provide the cider, hot chocolate and donuts and Lee Jaffke agreed to set up the food and drink so that Craig can enjoy trick or treating with his kids. Larry Adams will do the honors as Bonfire Master but we need a backup in case Larry is scheduled to work that night. Any volunteers?

PUBLIC ACCESS
The Public Access Committee (Sherry Woodbeck in particular) has done a great job hounding the White Lake Supervisor about this issue. It turns out the Township actually had an Ordinance in place since 2007 authorizing the Township to enforce the DNR rules (but no one knew about it)! Now we can move forward and try to establish a special assessment district to pay for monitoring the access site on weekends and Holidays between Memorial Day - Labor Day. Details to follow.

We are working with our neighbors across the lake to identify the boats that are illegally moored in front of the parks and beaches on the east side of the lake and to identify those folks who appear to be operating illegal marinas near the ski course. We will provide the information to the DNR and Sheriff so they can be ticketed.

FIREWORKS
We discussed next year’s fireworks show and if we want a two barge show. Our vendor has offered some new pricing options. It was suggested that if we are able to raise extra money for the “two barge show” we should hold the funds and try to obtain a premium date in 2013. Future Financial Reports will break out total collections between CIHA and NON CIHA (our friends across the lake).

CIHA 2011 DIRECTORY
The 2011 CIHA Directory will be delivered soon. We plan to publish every other year and want to make sure we have all new Members listed. Thanks to Steven Cooper, Sherry Woodbeck, Renee Brodie and Maureen Thomas for selling ads. We have made enough money to cover the print cost and a little profit too. :)

CIHA MEETING NOTES
JULY 12, 2011 @ CIHA PARK

Members present: Maureen Thomas, Dave Weber, Larry & Denise Adams, Shelly & Richard Brooks, Linda Tolman, Jeremy Macbeth, Bud Norton, Craig Leonard, Sherry Woodbeck, Rowena Elick, Jon & Valerie Brothers, Matt Slicker, Linda FitzGerald and Renee Brodie

PROGRESSIVE DINNER:
The Brooks are again organizing the progressive dinner. What a fantastic event this is. July 30th and there are still 2 spots available. Call Shelly for details about houses that are involved in this wonderful get together and meet your neighbors’ event. 248.698.2795

PARK VANDALISM:
One of the benches has been broken beyond repair; there are cigarette burns in the pergola cover; and parts missing. Someone has used an ATV in the park damaging the lawn. Therefore, the majority voted to reinstate the old dusk to dawn curfew. The White Lake Police have been notified and agreed to assist us with enforcement. A formal notice will be sent to all CIHA members. A new sign will be posted: “Private Park - Residents Only” - “Closed Dusk to Dawn”

TREASURER’S REPORT:
The Financial Report is attached. We still have not collected dues from many members. Please mail your check to Dave Weber at 10033 Cedar Shores.

Fireworks:
The fireworks display this year was amazing!! A recent e-mail was sent out across the lake asking folks to vote for one of two dates for the 2012 fireworks. It was close, but Friday the 29th won, with a rain date of July 6th. It was suggested that in the future, we might consider choosing a Saturday later in July as many folks have friends/family who cannot attend so close to the holiday.

A big “Thank You” to Spraders On the Lake and to Patti Page, Brett Bonnivier, Matt Sprader and Tom & Pat Schwind who organized the fireworks fundraiser. They did such a GREAT job and raised $1500! Renee Brodie raised $65 with the bottle return on July 5th. Thanks Renee.

OBSTRUCTION AT ENTRANCE:
Another letter has been sent to the neighbor at the entrance asking them to cut back their hedges. It is truly a hazard trying to turn left when exiting the subdivision.

LADIES “TEA”:
It was decided to keep this event. Sherry Woodbeck agreed to organize. It was also suggested that a mens’ night (a Texas hold 'em or poker night) be held at the Community Center. Craig and Jeremy will look into this as a second fundraiser for the Fireworks. What do you think?

ADDITIONAL CONCERNS:
DOG OWNERS: Please keep your dogs on a leash when outdoors, no matter how small or friendly they may be. It's the law in Michigan! Don't forget to take the pooper scooper or baggie when you walk your dog or take it to the park. We've had many complaints about dogs running loose and owners who don’t pick up after their pets. Report strays to ANIMAL CONTROL (248) 391-4102.

P.S. If your leashed dog can still get into your neighbors yard, please shorten the leash!

MISCELLANEOUS:
It was decided that the leftover toys from past Christmas Bonfires would be donated to Toy’s for Tots.

We’ve borrowed an extra blue trashcan for use in the park. It will be chained to the fence and emptied as needed. PLEASE USE IT! Thank you Frank and Kerri Wimmer.

RCOC recently had some repairs made to our roads. Thank you Ernie Maier, Rick Morin and Val Brothers who called them repeatedly and helped point out problem areas (or pot holes).

The rising and falling lake levels have been a big problem for many. We plan to invite someone from the Water Resource Commission to come to our Annual Meeting and discuss our concerns.

We have been advised that the first treatment for weeds in the bays did not happened this year because the lake level was too high and it could cause damage to lawns and landscaping along the shore.

There was a discussion about whether to keep the CIHA web-site. Sherry volunteered her son Adam Woodbeck to keep it updated (hope you’re not in trouble now, Sherry). It would be handy to keep updates, proposals, newsletters, rules and regulations etc on. What do you think?

PUBLIC ACCESS:
We are establishing a Public Access Committee that will be responsible for hounding the White Lake Supervisor (phone calls, letters etc..) and Township Board (letters and speaking in the public comment section of their meetings) to pass an Ordinance permitting the Township to enforce the rules at the public access site.

Thereafter, we will circulate a petition to establish a special assessment district across the lake to pay for the monitoring the access site on weekends and Holidays between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The committee consists of: Craig Leonard, Larry Adams, Matt Slicker and Sherry Woodbeck. Maureen also invited the President from Golden Shores to join and he has accepted. They will also look into illegal docking and mooring on the lake by non waterfront owners.

NO WAKE ORDINANCE & RULES:
A copy of the No Wake Ordinance for our lake has been posted on our website and is being emailed with this Newsletter. All of the bays and canals on the lake and the Huron River access are NO WAKE at all times. In addition, Michigan Boating Regulations require that all motorboats operate at a NO WAKE speed within 100 feet of swimmers, folks fishing, docks, rafts, and moored boats.

CIHA 2011 DIRECTORY:
The 2011 CIHA Directory will be published in the Fall. If you have a business or product you would like to promote, ad space is available for purchase. Please remember to support our local advertisers. Going to press soon, so please contact: Steven Cooper at 248-890-1890 or at sccoop@aol.com.

BOTTLE DRIVE:
Renee Brodie and Sherry Woodbeck agreed to collect cans and bottles after Labor Day and donate the money to the 2012 Fireworks. Details to follow.

SEND US YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS:
We are still missing many members email addresses. We send out important alerts, reminders, updates and this newsletter via email. Please send us an email so we can add you to our contact list: cedarislandhoa@hotmail.com.

Also, if you know of a new neighbor, please let us know so we can welcome them.

We have many things we are working on, and would like your opinions. If you can’t make a meeting and still want to comment, please let us know. We welcome comments and suggestions.

TORNADO SAFETY TIPS
Tornado Watch: Tornado conditions exist.
Listen to the weather. Keep watch.
Tornado Warning: A tornado has been sighted.
Take cover.
In Michigan, tornados usually occur in the
spring and early summer often between 3 p.m.
and 9 p.m. Look for dark (green) clouds - large
hail -low lying clouds (with or without a funnel).
and listen for a loud sound (like a freight train).
If you hear the tornado sirens, get off the lake
immediately and go indoors. Move to the lowest
level of your home and take shelter in a small,
interior room (e.g. closet or bathroom). Stay
away from doors, windows, glass and mirrors.
For more tips go to:

Members present: Maureen Thomas, Craig Leonard, Kelly House, Judy Paulson, Sherry Woodbeck, Bill Fitzgerald, Richard Brooks, Shelly Brooks, Matt Slicker, Sharon Jacob, Michael Marcum, Linda Tolman and Renee Brodie.

FIREWORKS
Fireworks are scheduled for Friday July 2 with a rain date of July 10. We are still in need of donations. As of the date of this newsletter, we have raised almost $9000 of the $11,000 needed. Richard Brooks will be going door to door during the next two weeks. If you haven’t donated yet, please send a check to Dave Weber, or give it to Richard when he stops by.

Parking: We will be taping off the park again for extra vehicle parking to alleviate some of the parking concerns we have had in the past. Please ask your guests to park on one side of the street (across from the mailboxes) and pull off of the road on to the grassy county right of way to allow traffic to pass in and out of the subdivision.

TREASURER’S REPORT
As of June 14, 106 members have paid dues. A copy of the current financial report is attached.

BOTTLE & CAN DRIVE
We raised almost $500 with our Bottle & Can Drive at the park. Thanks to Sherry Woodbeck for the great idea. Thanks also to Kelly House, Renee Brodie, Linda Tolman, Maureen Thomas & Sherry Woodbeck for doing the dirty work! We are considering holding another one after July 4th (with the other side of the lake) to start the fund for next year’s fireworks. Contact Sherry Woodbeck or Renee Brodie to volunteer.

SPRADER'S FUNDRAISER
The Sprader’s on the Lake fundraiser was a HUGE success despite the rainy weather. $1025 was raised for the fireworks and everyone had a great time with friends and neighbors. Thanks to Matt Sprader, Patti Page, Marv & Denise Younger and Pat & Tom Schwind for sponsoring the event again this year.

PARK CLEAN-UP
Park Clean-up was May 1. In addition to the usual clean up of branches, weeds and debris; the fence was painted and repaired. We still have a pile of branches to burn and a portion of the fence still needs painting. If you’d like to help, contact cedarislandhoa@hotmail.com.

Thanks to this year’s volunteers: Dave Weber, Craig Leonard, Chuck & Kelly House, Maureen Thomas, Renee Brodie, Jeremy Macbeth, Bill Fitzgerald and John Macbeth

BOAT LAUNCH
The township still has not drafted the ordinance to monitor the boat launch despite our suggestions to overcome funding issues. Maureen plans to talk to Township officials and/or the Township legal counsel to try to get this moving.

PROGRESSIVE DINNER
This year’s progressive dinner will be July 31(the date in the directory is incorrect). Two more host homes are needed. Contact Shelly & Richard Brooks to host or sign up to attend.

LADIES WINE TASTING
We are looking for volunteers for the ladies wine tasting. We need one volunteer to hostess the party. The hostess gets to pick the date but does not need to supply food or drink. We are also looking for a coordinator to organize the menu. Email cedarislandhoa@hotmail.com if you are interested in hosting or organizing.

GOOSE ROUND-UP
John Morawski and Maureen Thomas attended the DNRE class and handled the nest removal in May. The round up took place last Saturday. The names of the volunteers and number of geese removed were not available at the time of printing and will be reported in the next newsletter.

WEBSITE
If you have any pictures of the lake or neighborhood activities please send them to Kelly House at cedarislandhoa@hotmail.com to be posted on the website www.ciha.us.

DIRECTORY UPDATE
